A few hours by train, the capital and largest city of Rajasthan, famed for its pink colour scheme and the Amber Fort – on the edge of the desert.

Arriving at night, being mobbed by taxi-touts (when our hotel was 200m from the station), lost in the dusty roadway underpass but escorted by a security guard to the front gate of our beautiful, luxury hotel – all in the first 20 minutes!

And then wandering the back streets as we always do – stumbling across the City Palace and finally the “Pink City” – an area painted pink for an 1876 Royal Visit, and kept that way to this day…

A half hour rickshaw drive and we were at the Amber Fort, high on a hill and then Jaigarh Fort, even higher (our driver insisted that it was best we walked/climbed – sigh!) and finally a “step well” Rach discovered on the web that the driver hadn’t seen before – very peaceful and geometric!
