Almost slap-bang in the centre of Sri Lanka is Kandy, the second largest city in the country, a curious mix of colonial and chaotic architecture, topped off with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a must-see for all locals so inclined.

We were more interested in a herd of orphan elephants an hour or two away at Pinnewala. Twice a day, fifty or so elephants of various ages are led out of the orphanage to the river to bathe. It’s quite a sight and looks like they seem to enjoy it as do the hoards of onlookers…

Back in Kandy we checked out their famous (and very good) botanical gardens. If we only had more time but we had a seaplane to catch!
