From South America to Europe to the Middle East… It’s been quite a month!!!

We’re currently in Amman, the capital of Jordan – a frenetic city with motorways and winding alleys, spice stalls and supermarkets, mosques and McDonald’s…

Arriving in the rain last night, to our hotel in the suburbs, it all felt quite alien and being NYE, a bit frustrating. Our hotel has armed security guards and like all major buildings here, an Xray machine and metal detector at the entry. Last night we even had a large police presence but that seems to have gone now.

Dinner at a nearby restaurant was an eye-opener – a strictly local affair at a large, traditional restaurant – lashings of homus, bread, grilled meats and way, way too much food for us both!

As for an alcohol-free new years’ – not quite. We found a bar at the back of the hotel and were the only two customers (with a glass of local wine each) until at 11.59pm a bunch of hotel staff arrived and pumped up the music. Suffice to say, NYE isn’t big here…

Today – off to the ‘citadel’, some ancient Roman ruins in the centre of Amman and then a couple of hours wandering the souq’s (markets) and now, back to the relative sanity of our hotel…
